21 Weeks

As you can tell, I was in the mood for some  PINK in this week's belly shot in honor of the gender reveal we had this past week, see below for more about that!

This week's photo background: Now I had a very meaningful photo location last week, but this week's spot is pretty uneventful.  Truly, I just loved the cool grey color of this grey wall and I knew it would be a nice, neutral color for me to show the gender "color" of the baby.

Actual location is a Furniture Deals store here in Kansas City, nothing really too significant there. But it is a funny coincidence because if you look really close under the "F" in the sign you can see my name, "Ashley" obviously referring to Ashley Furniture, guess it was just meant to be!

Questions of the week:

1. How big is the baby (with Avery's help)?

Talk about one interesting fruit! Avery has maybe tried pomegranates once or twice, but not lately, so when I handed it to her (after striking her new "smile pose") she thought it was a ball and gladly threw it across the yard!

Checking out the size in relation to my belly.

The next day we cut it open and she chowed down on the pomegranate seeds! Not exactly my favorite fruit, but she loved how small and bite-size they were.

"Yup, I love them!"

2. What I'm eating...
I saw fresh, organic corn at my local health food store last week and nearly sprinted over to get it! I love corn on the cob, and apparently Baby Mila does too, as I've eaten a ton of it this week! My favorite way to eat it is with Earth Balance vegan butter and garlic salt. What do you put on your corn on the cob? Talk about a summer classic, especially when you're pregnant...just make sure it's organic (nobody wants GMO corn!).

Just looking at this picture makes me want an ear of it
right now!

3. Anything new this week?  I started swapping out some of my workout DVDs for "prenatal workout DVDs" this past week and I remembered just how much I love prenatal workouts! I feel like I lasted longer with my pre-pregnancy DVDs during Avery's pregnancy, but since my belly has grown bigger and faster this time around, it's only fitting that I start my prenatal DVDs a little sooner.

After doing one of them for the first time since I was pregnant with Avery, I fell in love over again.  It was kind of funny how it brought back memories of Avery's pregnancy too.  To me, finding the perfect prenatal DVD is like a perfect pair of prenatal jeans, it feels so right and you don't have to modify anything....like it was made just for you and you're rapidly growing belly! It got a little annoying to constantly having to be modifying my pre-pregnancy workout DVDs to accommodate for my growing belly, so to bring back the ones that "cater" to the belly and that even help stregthen it were so worth it!

In case you're wondering, I work out for 45 minutes to one hour each day and I rotate three types of workouts:
Day 1: Pilates
Day 2: Yoga
Day 3: 1 hour of walking on the treadmill or outside
Day 4: Repeat....Pilates, Yoga, Walking (or sometimes I switch them up)

You can read more about my "Prenatal Workouts" in this post from Avery's pregnancy, and you may notice I used to workout an hour and a half, but now there's no way I have time for that now since Avery's here. I am pretty content with the 45 minutes to an hour routine that I've got and I feel like it gives me the full workout I need to keep my body and my baby healthy.  Here's my two favorite prenatal workout DVDs that are mentioned in that post.

1. 10 Minute Solutions Prenatal Pilates: One challenging and yet still gentle, pilates workout. I love that I still get to do"ab" workouts in this one, with the support of a pillow, of course.

2. The Divine Mother Prenatal Yoga Series with Anna Getty (sorry no video preview, but one awesome  Kundulini-style yoga workout).

Do you have a favorite prenatal workout DVD? Share it below!

4. Best moment of the week: Finding out that we're having a GIRL at our gender reveal party! Finding out your baby's gender is such an exciting moment of any pregnancy, and we were all so thrilled to finally know that Baby #2 was a girl. More power to you mamas that wait till the end...it would drive my "inner-planner" crazy if I had to wait that long!

Seeing pink balloons!

Now that we know it's a girl, and what we're naming her, it's been great for Avery. She talks to Mila, tells her "hi", says, "I love you Mila", and gives her many, many kisses. She proudly introduces her now and talks about all the ways she will take care of her, or so she say's she will, when she is born.  She also plans out all the adventures they will have and runs through a variety of scenarios daily such as this one:

Avery: "Mila needs a highchair."
Me: "Yes, Mila will need a high chair when she's older."
Avery: "Mila say, 'Wah wah', I want out of my high chair!' I say, "No no Mila, you have to eat your dinner!"

What would we do without you Avery? ( :

For me, finding out the gender not only helps me visualize what my life will be like when Baby Mila is born, but also let's me start planning the nursery, a task my mom and I love to do!  Since we are both on summer vacation from our teaching jobs, we've had lots of free time to plan paint colors, room arrangements, and other decor ideas. Look a post to come in the next few days with some of my nursery ideas!

Favorite Moment of the Week #2: Midwife Visit!  Another fun thing we did this week was have a visit from our awesome midwife, Lisa.  Aside from hearing Baby Mila's heartbeat and checking my blood pressure, I spent a good deal of time talking with her about our birth plans (here at home again) and where we would have it (in our bedroom). One of the best parts about prenatal visits this time around is that Avery gets to be involved. Here she is helping Lisa check the heartbeat with an instrument called a Doppler.

Listening to Baby Mila's heartbeat, you can see she was
hanging out pretty low in my left side here.

Since getting a doctor's kit for her birthday, Avery loves to pretend to take care of me and the baby (and  all of her stuffed animals too).  She loves to pretend to be the midwife and check the heartbeat and my blood pressure, all of which get the same reply..."Lookin' good!"

You can bet the pretend play that comes from these
midwife vists, goes on for several days with Avery!

Having Avery involved in all of my prenatal visits, which take place at our home, is one of the many reasons why we choose to use a midwife and we plan to have a home birth. You can read more about my other reasons in my post, "The Top 5 Reasons I'm Having a Homebirth with a Midwife". A few other reasons include:
  1. Less stress (for me, doctors and hospitals freak me out!)
  2. More choices (what to wear, what to eat, what to listen to, location to birth...all our up to me)
  3. Having my choices honored (it's one thing to say I want to birth in the water, but knowing my midwife will honor that choice instead of throwing my "birhting plan" out the window)
  4. Safer (less germs, diseases, toxic cleaners, etc. here in my home)
  5. Avoiding the "cascade of interventions" that typically take place at a hospital (Pitocin, epidural, c-section).

As I state in the post mentioned above, a homebirth with a midwife is right for me, but not for everyone. Some people are more comfortable at a hospital or have more high-risk prengancies, in that case, a hopsital birth is probably just right for you. When it comes to pregnancy, labor, and birth you have to do what's right for you and your baby...whatever that may be, wherever that may. This is just one option that what works for me.

See you in two weeks for the next update!

Our Gender Reveal Party

Hey everybody, I've got some exciting news to share! The other day we had our gender reveal party for Baby #2, and since we cut a cake to reveal Avery's gender, we thought it would be fun to mix it up this time and try balloons in a box.

Getting ready to open the box!

The idea is simple, pink balloons come out of the box, it's a girl. Blue balloons come out of the box, it's a boy. Let's see what came out of the box...

Here's a play-by-play of the box being opened!

I think I see some pink...

It's a girl!

Was Avery excited? You bet!

It's official, we are having another girl!

Then we opened up a pink gift bag to reveal the name we had chosen if it was a girl (we had a blue bag as well, which as you can guess...did not get opened!).

And the name is...

Mila! (pronunced Mee-la). Full name will be Mila Grace.
Although I wish I had some huge significant story behind why we chose that name, I don't other than the fact that I heard it when I was pregnant with Avery and I thought, if I ever have another girl, I want to name her Mila. Then sure enough before I got pregnant, I started seeing it places, kind of like a sign (the same way I would see Avery's name before I knew I was having a girl with her). That's when I knew it was meant to be.

And as you can tell by the pink we were wearing to the party, we had a pretty good hunch it was going to be a girl. And although I'm sure we would have loved to have a boy, we are thrilled to have another girl. Both Brandon and I have always seen ourselves having girls, so now we've got them...two of them, hope we're ready! ( :

So now that you know the low-down on what we're having, and what we're naming her, letting get to some of the fun gender reveal party details. I had a lot of fun planning Avery's gender reveal and this time around was no different. My main inspiration for the party came from the invitation we used...

The invitation: Obviously this is not our exact invitation, but since our's has our last name and address all over it, I decided to keep a little privacy and just show you a sample invitation that we used. The invitation is a "Chalkboard Gender Reveal Invitation" by Yellow Desk Designs on Etsy. As many of you all know I love chalkboards as photo props, so when I saw this one, it immediately stood out to me and I knew the colors of the party would obviously be: pink and blue, but this time I wanted to add in some black!

(source)

Although you can't see it on the invitation, since it's not our's, we had the gender reveal on June 1st, our six year wedding anniversary. It really made for one special way to celebrate our anniversary together!

Celebrating our 6 year anniversary!
Back to the party details, I mentioned that my colors were pink, blue, and black, so here's how I incorporated them into the party...

The decorations: Tissue paper pom poms, shocker there. You all know how much I love, love, love pom poms so it was a given that they would be a part of this party! Here's a tutorial on how I make my tissue paper pom poms. To mix it up a little bit, I used some pink lanterns and black "tissue fan" from Party America. Usually I don't feel like that store is very "green" since most of what they sell is one-time use, disposable items, but I plan to save and re-use these decorations again. Not sure what I'll use a black tissue fan for, but who knows right?!

The decorations which we hung on each side of my
dining room table.

I repeated the grouping again near our front door.

My mirror needed something, so I made this "triangle banner"
out of pink, black, and blue paper and then I tied the triangles
together with black ribbon.

I made a "printable" in Photoshop
by using a chalkboard background
and "chalky" text.

Little repeat from Avery's gender reveal party, but it's always
fun to see changes in the belly shot week by week.

A chalkboard welcoming sign for our front door.
I actually got this for Avery's nursery in
this post. Tina, I'm still getting use out
of it!  ( :

The food: We kept it pretty simple with some desserts treats since we knew the main excitement of the party was the balloon reveal! Here was our menu:

  • Fruit Salad
  • Various gluten-free/Trader Joe's cookies
  • Gluten-free, vegan, sugar-free chocolate cupcakes (with this recipe from the book, Babycakes by Erin McKenna) and vanilla frosting (with this recipe from Whole Life Nutrition Kitchen)

Our dessert treats

Chocolate cupcakes with naturally-colored frosting!

I used these India Tree natural food coloring dyes to color
the frosting, look for a video to come soon about this
great "green" alternative to traditional food colorings.

Clearly they passed the Avery-test!

Here's some other fun pictures from the party...

Team Girl!

Team Boy!

After the reveal, someone had quite a good time playing hide-and-seek in the box...

As she would say, "Where Avery go?"

"Here I am!"

A big thanks to Erin, she is the paraprofessional who works
with me in my classroom. She's basically like my"school Mom"!
She's the one who made the box and filled it with the secret balloons.

Brandon and his parents.

My family, and my "not-so-little brothers" can you believe
they are younger than me?!

My grandparents.

My mom, best-friend, party-planning
partner in crime, and much more.
I couldn't do it without you Mom!

Our dog Jill soaking in the fact that there are going to be TWO
little girls running around our house now!

Well, Mila...we can't wait to meet you in October!

A profile shot from her 20 week ultrasound.

Let the nursery planning begin...

19 Weeks

Well we're getting pretty close to halfway in this pregnancy journey! Here I am at 19 weeks...

This week's photo background: This week's spot is no ordinary brick wall...

It's the gym where Brandon and I met over 10 years ago! Back then it went by a different name, but the location is still the same. Funny story about how we met...we both actually would go to the gym at the same time, every single day just to see each other (but we would never talk). Obviously we were both too shy and just figured it was a coincidence that the other just happened to workout at the same time.
The gym (that now goes by a different name)
where Brandon and I met 10 years ago.
But luckily after four long months of drooling over each other, a mutual friend introduced us. We went out on our first date later that week and have been together ever since. The reason I chose the location for this week is that our 6 year wedding anniversary is later in the week, so I figured it would be best to give thanks to the place that made it all happen. Ironically, about a year after we started dating, we both cancelled our membership and started working out from home, and haven't been back since taking this photo.  ( :

Here we are at our wedding six years ago...

So glad you decided to get a
membership at the gym, Brandon!

When coming back to the gym this time, things were obviously a little different, since it was no longer just the two of us! Make way for Avery...

"Mom...just smile like THIS!"

Without this place, Avery wouldn't even be here! Kind of crazy to think about. Anyone else meet their significant other at the gym? Share below.

"I workout too!"

Questions of the week:

1. How big is the baby (with Avery's help)?

To eat or not to eat...

Clearly the most tempting food to date for Avery. So tempting in fact that you can already see a few bites taken from it!

A few minutes later, there was no taking it back. Luckily
she took a break so I could peel it.

2. What I'm eating...
A glass of water with crushed ice is my favorite thing right now. Usually after dinner I crave some type of sweet treat or dessert, but lately all I want is a nice, big glass of water (with crushed ice). Maybe it's because the weather is getting warmer here in the Midwest, or by the end of the day I realize I haven't drank enough water so I have a sudden urge to get some hydration...but either way it's my favorite thing right now.

Okay that was an innocent pregnancy craving...I still have my crazy cravings though there aren't that many. This week's is Trader Joe's Ridge Cut Salt & Pepper Potato Chips dipped in Trader Joe's Bold & Smoky Kansas City Style BBQ Sauce. Kind of strange, like most pregnancy cravings, but pretty dang good when you need a salty snack. And after learning all about GMOs I'm happy to find a GMO-free snack from Trader Joe's who's store brand of products are all GMO-free. Yeah!

Just a chip dipped in BBQ sauce...
nothing to see here.

3. Anything new this week? I mentioned earlier that Brandon and I's wedding anniversary is coming up later this week and that is actually the same day that we will be having our Gender Reveal Party! Avery's Gender Reveal Party was one of my favorite memories of her entire pregnancy...

Here we are after the cake has been cut and I can see the
"pink" icing!
For this Gender Reveal Party we are mixing things up a bit and we're going to be revealing the gender in a different way, so be sure to stay tuned later this week to find out what it is. Feel free to cast your vote below as to whether you think it's a boy or a girl. Avery's vote changes daily, which just cracks me up, but she does tend to lean more to saying it's a girl, so we'll see if she's right!

4. Best moment of the week: Feeling kicks! Back around 18 weeks I started to feel a random kick here or there, but in this past week, the movement has really increased. Granted, it's still small enough and not frequent enough for Brandon to feel, but I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before him and Avery can both watch and feel the kicks. In the mean time, I'll enjoy these little kicks to myself.

Here's Avery determined to feel a kick or just "tickle"
the baby, as she calls it.
One time when I feel it the most is when I'm a bit hungry and then I take the first bite of whatever I'm eating, bam...then I'll get a little kick. Almost to say, "It's about time Mom! I was hungry in here, keep that food coming!"Another common time is when I'm laying in bed, about to fall asleep, that's when the movement party begins. Or maybe I've just finally slowed down enough to really feel the movement, but either way, I love how it feels. Now if I could just know who/what to call "it" I'd be set!
