My #1 Tip for Earth Day

Being a green/eco-friendly blogger, Earth Day is a little like Christmas. It's the one day each year that you can count on most people to at least considering how they could make a change in their lifestyle to better take care of our earth. Whether that be to increase their recycling, turn the water off when they are not using it, or pledge some money to an environmental advocacy group...chances are Earth Day is the day when it's most likely to happen and for that I'm grateful.

"Hi, my name is Ashley and I am a Tree Hugger."
Earth Day is also a time when people look to me, Mrs. Green Blogger herself and say, "What's one thing that I can do to go green on Earth Day?"  My answer: "Buy yourself an Earth Day present." Sounds funny right? But I'm serious! On our birthday we get presents, on Christmas we get presents, most of us get presents on Valentine's Day, not to mention other smaller holidays like Mother's Day and Father's Day...so why not Earth Day?  Now I'm not talking about buying a present for the Earth, I'm talking about a present for yourself or your family.  Specifically one that will help you to go green throughout the year.

One my most recommended ways to live a greener lifestyle is to switch from using disposable products to reusable ones. So this Earth Day, I invite you to treat yourself to an Earth Day present that will help you go from something disposable to something reusable.

Think about it, by swapping out cloth napkins for paper towels, or a reusable water bottle for plastic ones, you not only reduce the amount of waste you send to the landfill, you cut the time it takes to manufacture, transport, sell and buy the disposable product, and you even save some money in the long run because you don't have to keep re-buying the same thing over again.  Better yet, making the switch to reusable products to disposable ones can sometimes help protect you from being exposed to chemicals such as BPA and phthalates.

Now I know the world of "Green products" can seem confusing, intimidating, and expensive at times, so to help you out I'll share a few of my favorite reusable green swaps that I've found which I love, trust, and use daily. Even better, I purchased these products within my own money...no product placements here, so you can trust that what I'm sharing is my own honest opinion, not one I'm being paid for.

Here's a video walk through of my favorite green products..

Let the green shopping begin...

1. Swap out plastic water bottles for a reusable glass one. I like this one: Smart Planet Hydro 1 Glass Water Bottle with Silicone Sleeve ($15).

Mason jars are a go-to for me as well.
These Ball MasonJars (Quart size) cost me $10 for a pack of 12.
2.  Instead of plastic straws you could use stainless steel straws (I've broke more glass ones than I can count, so I now use stainless steel ones. I haven't had any issue with metallic taste or anything).   I like these: RSVP Endurance Stainless Steel Straw Set of 4 ($9).

Can you tell I like chia seed drinks? Click here to learn more.
3. Switch from dryer sheets to reusable wool dryer balls. Here's ones I like: Every Day Willow Wool Dryer Balls Set of 3 ($18) Read more here: "Goodbye Dryer Sheets!"

Every Day Willow Wool Dryer Balls

4. Switch from paper towels and Kleenex boxes to cloth napkins. In the past, I've bought mine off Etsy (here's one of my favorite Etsy stores for cloth napkins: Moo Cow Momma), but lately I tried making my own by "serging" cotton flannel. I love how they turned out and how I got to pick my own fun fabrics. Post me a comment below if you are interested in a tutorial on those.  Read more here about my switch to cloth napkins: "How I Use, Clean and Store Cloth Napkins." Or see how I make my own here!

Cloth napkins I made by "serving" cotton flannel fabric.

5. Switch from using Ziploc bags and instead use reusable snack bags. I have accumulated several brands over the years, the one you see below is: Lunchskins Reusable Snack Bags Set of 3 ($25). I also like one called Itzy Ritzy Snack Bags which have a zipper. ($9)

Lunchskins Snack Bag
6. This one is more for the ladies, but you could switch from using tampons and pads to using a Diva Cup, menstrual cup ($25). Read more here: "How to Green Your Period."

Or if that's a little too "green" for you, you could use cloth pads. I like this brand from Mommy and Me Creations: Heavenly Cloth Menstrual Pads (set of 6- 9" pads for $45).

7. If you have babies, you could try using cloth diapers. Whether that be using a service for a week (here's the one we use: Metro Cloth Diapering) or just buying one cloth diaper to use in addition to your disposable ones, either way could help you green your diaper routine. Read more here: "Going Green...One Diaper Change at a Time" or "Ways to Go Green During Postpartum & with Newborns."

8. While we're on the topic of babies, you could swap out plastic baby bottles for glass ones. I love these: Evenflo Classic Baby Bottles Set of 3 ($5). Read more here: "My Green Pumping & Baby Bottle Routine."

9. Next you could trade out plastic kid plates/cups/bowls for stainless steel ones that will last longer and be free of chemicals and plastics. I like this set by Untangled Living Stainless Steel Dish Collection Set ($36) that includes a bowl, cup, plate, fork and spoon (though I seem to have lost both the fork and spoon right when I needed them for this photo/video).

10. Instead of using baby bibs that only last a few weeks and have to be thrown out you could try Baby Buddy Bib Clips $8 (we call them Bear Clips because of the little bears on the clips). They work by clipping onto any cloth napkin, towel, or even paper napkin and cover your child's clothes while they eat. Read more here: "My Favorite Green Baby Bib."

11. Last up, why not get a shirt to show that you're taking steps to live a greener life? Here's the shirt I was wearing in the video: "One Earth One Chance" and here's a link to the other eco-themed shirts in my online t-shirt shop: "Ashley's Green Life Spreadshirt Shop."

So there you have it, a few ideas to get you started shopping for your Earth Day present. Have any more to add to the list? Share your recommendations below. And of course, Happy Earth Day!

Ways to Go Green During Postpartum & With Newborns

Just as with most areas of my life, I try to find the green route...greener options, greener choices, you name it. Postpartum and newborn care are no different. So today I will share some of my favorite ways tho go green when it comes to caring for your postpartum journey and for taking care of your newborn baby.

Here's my tips, with the help of Avery and Mila in this week's video...

No time to watch the video? I get that!  So let's breakdown the tips with pictures...

1. Breastfeed. Aside from being the best food for your baby, breastfeeding is also a great way to go green in how you avoid all the waste, packaging, and production involved in using infant formula. Granted, if you have a health condition or for some reason cannot breastfeed, then this tip is not for you and that's okay...there's plenty of other ways to go green. But if you are on the fence, I'd highly recommend it.

I breastfed Avery throughout my pregnancy with Mila, and continue to tandem breastfeed her now.  I'm sure that seems kind of crazy to some of you, and even to me sometimes I'll look down and be like, "Wow, I'm tandem breastfeeding, never thought I'd be doing that...but here I am!"

Tandem breastfeeding my girls.

Really though, it's not that bad. For starters, I love knowing that Avery is continuing to get extra nutrition from the breast milk, and it has been helpful for coping with the changes of having a new sibling. So instead of breastfeeding just being something that Mila and I do, it continues to be a chance for me to bond and connect with Avery, something that's much needed during these crazy days as we adjust to being a family of four. You can read more in this post about some of the benefits of extended breastfeeding and how helpful it is not only for toddlers, but also for moms too.

So, in the long run I think that breastfeeding is one of the best ways you can go green! There's no warming, no containers, no trash, just good ol' breast milk!

2. Glass baby bottles. Now in a few weeks, I'll be going back to work, and at that time I will be pumping for Mila, you can read more about my pumping routine in this post. One way that I try to "green up" this routine is to use a glass baby bottle instead of plastic. Now there are lots of baby bottles on the market these days that claim to be BPA and phthalate-free, but for me I'm still a little bit phobic of plastic, so I stick with glass.

I love Evenflo's Classic Glass Baby Bottles, which cost about $6 for 3 bottles. I had about 6 bottles with Avery, 3 in the big size, 3 in the small size and now I'm able to use them with Mila.  Most plastic baby bottles get scratched or start to fade after just a few months, thus leaving you to throw them away and buy more. But with glass they clean, sparkly, and just as sturdy for years.

3. Cloth nursing pads. It didn't take me long once Avery was born to realize that when I was breastfeeding her that the milk came out of BOTH sides, not just the side the baby was on...who knew right?! ( : Anyways, to catch the flow from the other side or occasionally even the side the baby is on, I use cloth nursing pads. I use, "Heavenly Nursing Pads" from the website, Mommy & Me Creations. Avery calls them my "milk pads" and is quite the helper in helping me to keep track to them, as she is always picking them up from around the house and telling me, "Don't forget your milk pads!"

These milk pads are about 5 inches in diameter and are made with organic hemp fleece. A set of two pads costs $4. Basically I stick them in my nursing bra or nursing tank top and they absorb the flow as needed. Then when I'm done with them, I throw them in my laundry and they are clean and ready to go again. In the early days and weeks, I probably go through a 2-5 pads a day.  These are the same pads that I used with Avery and it's so nice to get a chance to use them again instead of having to buy new ones.

Now there are all kinds of cloth nursing pads you can find out there either on Etsy or Amazon, so anything you can find that's reusable, instead of disposable (as most nursing pads are) is a step in the "green direction".

4. Use cloth diapers. From the time that Avery was born, we've used cloth diaper service to help us go green with our diapering and it has been great! As you can imagine, cloth diapers are a greener option compared to traditional disposable diapers because there is no waste so nothing goes to the landfill. Now although cloth diapers are a bit more expensive than disposables, (it costs about $20 a week for our service), it's well worth it for us to avoid the trash involved with disposables and I think the cloth fabric is more gentle on little baby bums as well.

We use a local company here in Kansas City called, Metro Cloth Diapering. They provide us with a cloth diaper insert, a diaper cover, a Snappi that holds it all together and even cloth wipes.

So when Mila has a dirty diaper, we place it in a "wet bag" along with all her other dirty diapers, and a few from Avery who still wears one at night, and then once a week the "dirty bag" gets picked up. Along with it, new diapers get dropped off..that are clean! The best part about it is that I didn't have to clean them! Kudos to you parents out there who wash your own cloth diapers. You are brave and I applaud your "green-ness!" But for us, using a service is the best option for us to go green in the line of diapers. You can see more pictures of steps involved in cloth diapering from this post with Avery.

Mila rocking her pink cloth diaper.

This is the cover that goes on the outside of the diaper
to keep her clothes clean and dry. She usually wears one a day
and we are in charge of washing these...which I can handle!

Good thing I've got this little helper to assist me in diaper changes!

5. Cloth pads for postpartum flow. Another lovely fact of life I learned after Avery was born was that after you have a baby, you bleed (as if you are having a period, but stronger). Hello to that! So to catch the flow you will need pads of some kind. But as I stated before, we're going to look to reusable options in our quest to go green instead of disposable, so in come cloth pads. I use a pad from the same company I mentioned above, Mommy & Me Creations called, "Heavenly Cloth Menstrual Pads." I purchased the set of six, 9 inch pads including inserts for $45.

In those first few days after birth, I went through 2-3 a day so I had to keep up on my laundry, but really it wasn't too hard to do and I loved knowing that I didn't have to buy any disposable pads or even any new cloth pads since these were the same ones I used after Avery was born and occasionally during my periods. Find other ways I go green with my period in this post.

Now just with the cloth nursing pads, there are all kinds of cloth menstrual pads out there on Etsy and Amazon, so shop around. Feel free to share any favorites that you may have below!

6. Keep baby products simple and "green". It can be very overwhelming for new parents to think that they need all kinds of personal care products to keep their baby clean and healthy, but I keep it simple and only use two products, both of which, our whole family uses.

First up is Dr. Bronner's Baby Mild Castile Soap. I've blogged about this awesome green soap in the past, and it is still my go-to especially now that Mila is here.

So when we give Mila a bath in our favorite baby bathtub, the Tummy Tub, we just add a little bit of this soap and it gets her nice and clean...minus the toxic ingredients of traditional soaps. Here's more reasons why we love the Tummy Tub too in this post!

"You're using Dr. Bronner's right Mom?"

Remember that little helper? Oh yeah,
she likes to help give Mila a bath
too!

The second product I use with Mila is Desert Essence Organics Fragrance-Free Hand & Body Lotion. This is the lotion that I use, as well as the rest of our family. I find that it works great if Mila has any dry skin or just needs a little moisturizing.

So there you have it, my top six tips on going green during postpartum and with newborns! Do you have any others to share or any favorite brands of green baby products? If so, share them below! Here's to green mommies and babies!

The Green Beauty Products I'm Using Right Now

Several years ago, I put a goal on my vision board to switch all of my traditional make up and beauty products over to non-toxic, natural alternatives. Back then it seemed pretty daunting, since I only had maybe one or two switched over. Fast forward a few years to now and I can finally say I did it! Now like all "green journeys" there are times when it was easy (eye liner) and times when it was hard (face wash), but I can say that I have officially kicked all toxic products out of my beauty routine.

Will I use these products forever? Who knows? I'm sure I will find some that work better, more that I can make from scratch, and some I may just get tired of...but no matter what I will keep striving towards that goal only using green alternatives. So today, I'm going to share those green beauty products with you. Everything from my toothpaste to my eye liner.

Here they all are...everything I need to get ready in the morning.
Kind of funny how in going green I reduced them down
quite a bit! I would have had  full counter a few years back!

Now if you're just starting on your green journey, you may wonder why should I care about switching over to green alternatives? My CoverGirl mascara works just fine or this Herbal Essences shampoo smells fruity so it must be natural, right? But I'm afraid that the "green truth" to traditional personal care products is that they are loaded with chemicals and toxins. Just take a look at the ingredient list on the back of the product, see things you can't pronounce or that match up to the visual below? That would be a sign you would want to drop that product and a find a green alternative.

Here's an awesome graphic that sums up not only what dangers are lurking in personal care products but also the effect they can have on our body...and it's anything but pretty.

Okay so now that we know what to avoid in personal care products here's a video rundown of not only, the GREEN products I'm using, but also HOW I use them everyday...

The "Green" Beauty Products I'm Using Right Now...

1. Lotion- This was one of the first swaps I made because I knew I covered my whole body with it, so that was a lot of surface area getting exposed to toxic ingredients.  My favorite green alternative lotion is a brand called: Dessert Essence Organics Hand and Body Lotion in "Fragrance Free".

Desert Essence Organics
Hand and Body Lotion

As I said in the video, before I got pregnant with Baby Mila I was using coconut oil for my body lotion and I really liked it. But when my belly started to grow, it started to itch, which I never had with Avery's pregnancy (when I used the Desert Essence Organics lotion).

So I switched back and the itchy feeling went away, knock on wood it keeps the stretch marks away...but if it doesn't at least my skin will feel smooth, soft and moisturized in the process.

Here I am at 41 weeks pregnant with Avery
stretch-mark free. Not exactly a claim they
make on the back of the lotion, but a
benefit I've noticed. ( :

2. Lip Gloss/Lip Balm- This one was the next priority for me because I got to thinking about how much lip gloss/lip balm I was ingesting, just from day-to-day use and it kind of freaked me out. I've tried a variety of products over the years and my go-to for color and shine is Burt's Bees 100% Natural Lip Gloss in the shade "Autumn Haze".

My go-to gloss.

Now when my lips feel dry and I just want some moisture, not the shine and color, I go to this organic lip balm from The Honest Co. in the flavor "Lavender Mint". When you order this lip balm you get 3 flavors in a pack for $10, and I like the other two (Sweet Orange Vanilla and Purely Simple), but the Lavender one is my favorite.

3.  Body Wash/Hand Soap/Shave Gel- My go-to for all things soap is Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap.  It's plant-based, all natural, organic, and it has no additives or foaming agents.  Even better, Dr. Bronner's has 18 different uses! In order to make body wash, I fill about 1/3 to 1/2 of an empty 16 oz. bottle with Dr. Bronner's Baby Mild Castile Soap and then I fill the rest with water. Other scents they have include: citrus, lavender, almond, and rose. Read more about why this is my favorite soap in the post, "A Green Alternative to Toxic Soap."

Dr. Bronner's Unscented Baby Mild
Castile Soap
Here's more ways that I use this awesome green soap!

I use the Dr. Bronner's diluted soap for hand soap around
the house.

I lather it up with exfoliating gloves for a body wash in
the shower (I know the gloves look kind of weird, but
it's my favorite thing to use instead of a loofa in the shower).

I even lather it up again and use it as a shave gel/shave soap.
I've also used coconut oil in the past and had some success
with that...just beware it will make the shower floor slippery!

5. Mascara- A great affordable and healthy option I use for my mascara is "Organic Wear" by Physician's Formula.  Their mascara is free of harsh chemicals, synthetic preservatives, and parabens.
Organic Wear Mascara by Physician's Formula

6. Eye Liner-  I so loved my old eye liners of the past, but when it was time to go green, I found Lavera's Eyeliner No.2 (Brown) and it's really done it's job well.
Lavera Eyeliner

Another favorite is Mineral Fusion Eye Pencil in the shade "Rough" and although it's great for a little lighter shade on my eyes, I use it most to fill in my eyebrows, mainly because it matches my eyebrow color perfectly. And hey, we all can use a little help on our eyebrows right?  ( :

7. Eye Shadow: I use Larenim Eye Shadow in "Bewitched Beige".
Larenim Eye Shadow

I've even tried to "green" my make up tools with this brush set from EcoTools, which as you saw from the video, Avery enjoys playing with as well!

EcoTools make up brush

8. Concealer- I don't use any foundation, powder, blush or bronzer, just this concealer for under my eyes and if I have any small blemishes. It's called: MyChelle Concelear in Solar.

MyChelle Concealer

9.  Deodorant- So in the past I made sure to get "green brands" of deodorant that were aluminum-free, but when I learned a simple and effective recipe I could make from home I ditched the store bought brands and went "super green" with this one.

Is that a yummy treat? Nope, just my deodorant.

The recipe I use is from my post, "How to Make Your Own Deodorant" and here's the recipe:

Natural Homemade Deodorant

Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder also called arrowroot starch/flour (I use Bob's Red Mill)
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil (I use Nutiva)
Directions: Combine all ingredients in a bowl and then transfer to a jar or other container. My husband poured the mixture (when melted) into an old deodorant container and he keeps it in the fridge so it will stay solid. When you do this, you can apply just like you would a traditional deodorant.

10. Toothpaste: Staying on the homemade bandwagon, here's another product that I can now say I make from scratch and it comes from my post called, "How to Make Your Own Toothpaste".

My homemade toothpaste.

Here's the recipe:
Non-Toxic Toothpaste
(from Crunchy Catholic Momma)
Ingredients:
Directions:
If your coconut oil is soft (climate is warm where you live, mine was warm when I made it this time):
1. Pour baking soda, coconut oil, xylitol, and peppermint oil extract into a large mixing bowl and combine until smooth. Then jump down to step 2.

2. Transfer to some sort of jar or container that closes to help keep it fresh and ready when you need to brush your teeth. We just scoop it out of the jar when we need some, but if you wanted you could keep a little spoon close by and scoop it out with that and apply it to your toothbrush each time.

Looks a little different from traditional toothpaste,
but boy does it make your teeth feel clean and smooth!

12. Shampoo and Conditioner- This one of the coolest green swaps that I made in my beauty routine because not only did it save me from being exposed to unnecessary toxins in traditional shampoos and conditioners, it also saved me a lot of money! The method I currently use is called "The No-Poo Method".
Don't mind me, just spraying vinegar in my hair!

This method consists of using two mixtures on your hair:
  • Shampoo: 1 cup water + 1 Tbs. baking soda (spray on and then rinse out)
  • Conditioner: 1/2 cup water + 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar (spray on and then rinse out) *a more common ratio is 1 Tbs. apple cider vinegar + 1 cup water for this one, but my hair is extra dry so I find that the extra vinegar is helpful.*
My new "shampoo and conditioner."

Read more about the technique and other tips in this post, "How to Wash Your Hair with the No-Poo Method".

13. Hair Gel- Now after switching to the No-Poo Method I was curious if I could start to make my own hair gel.  I had one homemade hair recipe under my belt, why not try another? This is where the savings really started to roll in because I found out about Flax Seed Hair Gel!

Hair gel from flax seeds? You bet!
This is one awesome gel that is made from flax seeds and water, total cost per recipe: 16 cents! My previous hair gel was costing me $13 every 2-3 weeks, so this was one swap that my wallet really loved. Read more about how to make it in my post, "How to Make Flax Seed Hair Gel".

Well that wraps up my entire beauty routine, I hope this helps to give you some ideas when it comes to "greening" your beauty products. If you have any questions about the products I use, I'd be happy to answer them.

Also, if you want some more information about this topic or to see how your personal care products rank check out: The Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetic Database.  On this awesome website you can enter a personal care product in the "Search" box and then it will rank it for you on a scale of 1-10.  One being groovy and healthy, and a ten being super toxic.  It will also break down each ingredient and let you know how toxic it is on the ranking of 1-10.  Very educational and easy and to understand.  ( :
